What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome ?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the catch-all phrase assigned to gastrointestinal tract issues that can’t be explained.

Symptoms include:

bloating
abdominal pain
alternative constipation and diarrhoea
mucus in the stool
nausea.

While there is no specific explanation for IBS in Western medicine, in Chinese medicine IBS is caused by Liver, Stomach or Large Intestine dysfunction.

These dysfunctions may be due to organ weakness, parasitic or bacterial infections or stress.

Types of IBS

There are three main types of IBS.

Diarrhoea predominant
Constipation predominant
Alternative constipation and diarrhoea.

All of which bring lifestyle difficulties for sufferers.

Why Western Treatment for IBS

Most Western treatment centres around changing the diet (e.g. a low FODMAP diet) and medication (anti-anxiety medications, pain-killers, anti-diarrhoea medication such as Imodium or Lomotil and anti-spasmotic medications). None of these deal with the root cause of the problem and many have unwanted side-effects. FODMAP diets can work well but they are very restrictive and can take a lot of the enjpyment out of eating.

Chinese Medicine Treatment of IBS Pain

Pulse diagnosis will determine which of your Liver, Stomach or Large Intestine is causing the problem and treatment is via acupuncture Melbourne, Chinese herbs and diet recommendations. It is also important to determine if you have an ‘emotional bowel’ (i.e. your symptoms are worse when you get upset) and deal with this, and to consider and determine whether dysbiosis (poor gut bacteria) or a parasitic infection may also be contributing to the problem.

By identifying and treating the root cause of the problem Chinese medicine aims to eliminate (or at least substantially reduce) IBS symptoms to help you get on with your life.

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Sandra since 2020 and acupuncture with her has had so many amazing results for me over the years. Initially I was seeing her to manage my back pain after having tried several other treatments and the results with acupuncture were absolutely amazing. Pain I’d been feeling for years went away. Last year we discussed me wanting to get pregnant which was proving difficult with my PCOS that disrupted the regularity of my cycle and ovulation and we also discussed me wanting to lose weight as I was really unhappy with my weight. I decided I’d do the weight loss program and then once I was happy with my weight I’d start the fertility program. To my surprise just as I was coming to the end of weight loss program I fell pregnant and it turned out the weight loss helped to normalize my hormone levels which resulted in a more regular cycle and ovulation. I then went straight into acupuncture for my pregnancy and I truly believe this was instrumental in me achieving a natural birth with no complications, resulting in a beautiful baby boy. I highly recommend Sandra, she is an expert in Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, and medicinal herbs. Emperors acupuncture where do I start but AMAZING I started seeing Sandra for fertility treatment as nothing was working for us for nearly 12 months so wanted to try alternative medicine and we are PREGNANT!!! Due in September 2023 not only did this acupuncture treatment help us with fertility but made my energy levels better and my cycle improved better than it’s ever been! I had a bad left foot, damaged for many years and i heard from a friend about her so decided to give the clinic a try.
