Acupuncture And How It Works

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body. The needles are made of stainless steel and are used only once.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Your body is genetically designed to keep you pain-free.

Your body’s central nervous system is extremely efficient at repairing problems and keeping you pain-free. Just think about how many times you have injured yourself and your body has fixed the problem.

What are the Benefits of Acupuncture?

  • Reduces pain
  • Relaxation and stress relief by stimulating the body’s release of endorphins (your ‘feel good’ hormone)
  • A drug free treatment

Acupuncture Benefits

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

This is a question many people ask us. You will feel the needles but it is nothing like having an injection or being pricked by a needle. You will feel a little prick when they are being inserted. Most people won’t feel the needles while they are in so you can lie their relaxed during your session. When we remove the needles there may be a little bleeding and occasionally there can be a little bruising, which doesn’t take long to heal.  Most people find it a very pleasant experience and extremely relaxing!

Why Do You Have to Feel It a Little?

Acupuncture works via the central nervous system.  By inserting the needles in certain places on your body, acupuncture triggers your central nervous system to increase the blood flow to particular areas of your body. If you do not feel the needle at all, the central nervous system is not sufficiently stimulated and acupuncture doesn’t work as well.

I have seen this time after time when treating pain.  Patients who feel the needles a little, need far fewer needles to get rid of the pain.

Your body’s natural healing capability is formidable.

In many cases your body is very capable of fixing itself. In your blood is a tiny army of natural pain killers (endorpins and enkephalins) which are as strong as any pharmaceutical pain killers, but with none of the side effects. These can stop pain dead in its tracks.  Also in your blood is the repair crew (white blood cells, macrophages, collagen, etc…) whose job it is to repair the problem.

What People Are Saying About Us

How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate energy flow, known as Qi (pronounced “chee”). While the mechanisms behind acupuncture’s effects are not fully understood by Western Medicine, several theories have been proposed to explain how it may work for pain relief:

This theory suggests that acupuncture may influence the gate control system of pain. According to this model, the nervous system can only process a certain amount of information at a time. By stimulating certain acupuncture points, the signals sent to the brain may “close the gate” and block the transmission of pain signals.

Acupuncture may trigger the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers. Endorphins can help reduce pain and induce a sense of well-being.

Acupuncture has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects. By reducing inflammation in the body, acupuncture may help alleviate pain associated with inflammatory conditions.

Acupuncture may influence the release and modulation of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and norepinephrine, which play a role in pain perception and mood.

Inserting needles into specific points may promote better blood circulation in the surrounding tissues. Improved blood flow can help deliver oxygen and nutrients to the area, promoting healing and reducing pain.

Acupuncture may influence the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, promoting a state of relaxation and reducing stress. Stress reduction can contribute to pain relief in certain conditions.

It’s important to note that while there is some evidence supporting the effectiveness of acupuncture for certain types of pain, not all studies agree, and more research is needed to fully understand its mechanisms and effectiveness. Additionally, individual responses to acupuncture can vary, and its success may depend on factors such as the specific condition being treated, the skill of the practitioner, and the individual’s overall health. Before considering acupuncture or any other alternative therapy, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional to discuss your specific situation and determine the most appropriate treatment options.
