Acupuncture for Knee Pain

Acupuncture for knee pain can help with pain relief and management.

Knee pain can be debilitating as it affects your ability to walk and go about your day. It can also affect your ability to exercise, which results in weight gain. Acupuncture has a long history of successfully treating knee pain.

How Acupuncture Treats Knee Pain?

Sometimes acupuncture will be done around the painful knee.  This style of acupuncture triggers the body’s local healing process to help reduce pain or repair the problem.

Other times acupuncture is done away from the sore knee. This style of acupuncture kick starts the body’s natural healing process and is best when there is a lot of pain.  Patients almost always feel better immediately after this style of acupuncture, but more treatments may be required to make it ‘stick’.

We can also combine cupping therapy and massage to help speed up the bodies healing

Why Does Your Knee Hurt?

Chronic knee pain is usually caused by:

  • Arthritis
  • Meniscus tear
  • Injury
  • ACL injury
  • Bursitis.

Will Acupuncture Work?

This depends on the nature of the knee problem. If the problem is not structural (i.e. no severe structural damage) then it is more likely to be effective.

If there is structural damage such as no cartilage left or a meniscus tear then treatment is less effective.

An operation may be recommended to you by your medical practitioner, but we recommend that you exhaust all other treatment avenues before you go under the knife.  Operations can be painful, expensive, have long recovery times and are not guaranteed to work. In our view operations should always be a last resort.
