Acupuncture And Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia Symptoms

The symptoms of Fibromyalgia include widespread tenderness and pain throughout the body. Each person has their own particular set of symptoms which are often accompanied by tiredness and emotional turmoil. Approximately 2 to 5 percent of the population appear to be affected, mainly women.

Symptoms include pain, increased sensitivity to heat or cold, numbness and tingling (particularly arms and legs), tiredness, memory and concentration problems and insomnia.
Secondary symptoms include anxiety and depression, IBS, headaches and overactive bladder.

Fibromyalgia Pain

Fibromyalgia is an inflammatory condition that causes pain, which has no known specific root cause in Western medicine.

In Chinese medicine the two causes of fibromyalgia are poor blood flow and malnourishment. Poor blood flow is often caused by being overweight. The vessels are squashed by the excess body fat making it difficult for blood, oxygen and nutrients to reach the muscles and joints.

The result is chronic pain.

Acupuncture treatment can help with pain relief and management.

Chinese medicine treatment focuses on vasodilating the vessels to improve blood flow to the body and acupuncture to improve the blood flow to specific areas of the body where you have pain.

Western Medicine Fibromyalgia Treatment

Western medicine treatment includes medications such as analgesics to reduce pain, anti-depressants to reduce stress and sleeping pills to aid sleep, as well as gentle exercise, stress management and relaxation strategies, massage and nutrition counselling. The trouble with these strategies is that none of them address the fundamental cause of fibromyalgia according to Chinese medicine.

Chinese Medicine Treatment

The cause of fibromyalgia in Chinese medicine is poor blood flow and malnourishment. When blood flow to your muscles, tendons and ligaments is poor they simply do not get the oxygen and nutrients they need to function properly. Without this they begin to hurt. To reduce pain, good blood flow must be restored to the body generally and more specifically to the particular areas you experience the most pain.
